Athletes from all over the world, even from the most remote lands, compete in multiple disciplines to earn the title of champions. At the end of the Summer Olympic Games, approximately 1017 medals will be awarded (not considering the possible parimerits). Gold, silver and bronze are the metals that distinguish the three steps of the podium, but how are the Olympic medals made?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][dfd_spacer screen_wide_spacer_size="50" screen_normal_resolution="1024" screen_tablet_resolution="800" screen_mobile_resolution="480"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][dfd_heading subtitle="" delimiter_settings="delimiter_style:solid|delimiter_width:80|delimiter_height:1" undefined="" title_font_options="tag:h2" subtitle_font_options="tag:div" tutorials=""]

How many medals to be made!

This is because we must consider the team sports, those in which the existence of a fourth place is not conceived and then we will give two bronzes and any ex aequo in disciplines that do not provide for play-offs. At the beginning of the event it is therefore practically impossible to know with absolute certainty the quantity of medals that must be available.

The only thing you are sure of is how many well-earned and coveted prizes must be realized. In every edition of the games the design of the medals is entrusted to a local artist who can give vent to his creativity even if with certain limits. In fact, he knows that on one side of the Summer Games Olympic medal he must necessarily depict the Panathinaiko stadium and the symbol of the Winged Victory. And of course they will have to be made in the three metals, silver gold and bronze. But where are these metals found?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][dfd_spacer screen_wide_spacer_size="50" screen_normal_resolution="1024" screen_tablet_resolution="800" screen_mobile_resolution="480"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][dfd_heading subtitle="" delimiter_settings="delimiter_style:solid|delimiter_width:80|delimiter_height:1" undefined="" title_font_options="tag:h2" subtitle_font_options="tag:div" tutorials=""]

An Olympic medal made from recycled electronic devices

[/dfd_heading][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][dfd_spacer screen_wide_spacer_size="15" screen_normal_resolution="1024" screen_tablet_resolution="800" screen_mobile_resolution="480"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]If for athletes the goal is to win an Olympic medal, for the IOC is to make the event as sustainable as possible. Steps forward have already been made with past editions of the games to take a huge step forward with the stages of Tokyo and Paris. In Paris, in fact, the goal of having the same number of female and male participants will be achieved, while in Tokyo the goal of metal recycling for medals already started in Vancouver and Rio has been crowned.

«We hope that our project to recycle small consumer electronics products and our efforts to create a more environmentally friendly and sustainable society will become the legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games», said the organizers of Tokyo 2020.

But what did they do to set an example? Simple created the Tokyo 2020 Medal Project. The project consisted in creating a mega collection of used electronic devices from which were then obtained the metals needed to make the medals. The initiative has been so successful that in the space of two years everything necessary has just been collected. In fact, from the equipment stored in the collection centers scattered throughout the cities and in the stores of NTT Docomo, a partner of the initiative, has earned 30.3 kilos of gold, 3,500 kilos of silver and 2,200 kilos of bronze.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
